Yeah, I generally always go with plump helmets, since its efficient, somewhat automated and is a very easy way to provide food and drink for everyone. Clearly I asked for 15 sets of copper armor. Once I was forced to play nice with the elves, since they always seemed to bring plenty of logs with them when ever their caravans showed up, so I'd usually load up their caravans with glass and rock crafts and send them on their way, my own caravans didn't seem to grasp what I meant when I specifically request tons of logs and fuel.

If you get lucky, a volcano will have plenty of sand/clay and metal ores that you can take advantage of, though you still need to find logs somewhere to make all those beds (why can dorfs make chests, cabinents, tables and chairs out of rock, wood, glass or metal, but can't seem to grasp the idea of using anything but at ree to make a bed?!), usually I trade or bring enough logs in areas with scarce or no trees to make my first round of beds, and go from there. Hence, I never embark to an area without dirt unless I bring LOTS of food and drink, since irrigating takes way to long, especially with untrained dorfs and no supplies. The most important thing to do in any embark is set up your food supply. I mean really, what kind of dorf burns trees to shape iron? Sadly, I lost all my saves when my hard drive failed on my laptop, but I have managed to get a few world gens with volcano's in arctic or frozen areas, I might just try them out, but I've become so spoiled by volcano embarks I shudder to think how bad I'd do going back to a more vanilla set up. It's just one of those things that is fun to think about, a colony of dorfs literally surviving in the frigid cold, using magma from the volcano to heat their homes and forge their metal, merchants and diplomats braving the cold and blizzards to view the wonder and trade for goods that settlers have produced and found, and armies of goblins battling through the cold to try and stomp out what they see as an affront to their own gods, only to be slaughtered on the very lip of the volcano and occasionally tossed into the lava themselves. Fisher dorfs tried to catch things in the freshly thawed water, but I'm not aware that they managed to catch anything, but I've never had any luck with fishing in any of my forts, I've been tempted to go into the raw files and disable the professions outright. Tapping the pipe of the volcano is an option, not wanting to do dig pump stacks up from the caverns for water, I just dug a channel to the frozen ocean and then dug a second channel bringing water back to my fort. It was a bit of a pain in the ass to build and defend against goblins, but I left the corpses at the top of the trail to show as warning to anyone else who'd show up or just bait the necromancers.

The coolest, though probably most resource and dangerous fort I made a ramp big enough for a trade wagon to actually descend into the crater above the lava with my depot on the inside, just the thought of the elves pissing themselves on the way down as they walked down the circular ramp over the lava before entering my fort proper.

I've never found the 'perfect' set up yet, Magnetite veins and coal below, a Haunted or Terrifying Biome for plenty of FUN cropping up, preferably just close enough to a few other civilizations for varied invasions and traders.ĭepending how much I want to kill my FPS, I'll make a small city around the pipe of the volcano, Depending on the size and shape I might even build all the way up to the crater.
